New Programme for 2015 - Build Skills

The Drop Bears have started the new year building and competing in the FIRST Robotics Competitions and with the local event Dual Down Under (DDU) approaching in June we wait to hear whether we get invited to compete at that event.

But grass is certainly not growing under our feet!   We have started our new programme for 2015 targeted at building skills and having fun!    We started out the “off season” with working through the fundamentals of the team and why it exists with everyone and in particular our Team Handbook and Code of Conduct ( http://thedropbears.org.au/wiki/index.php/Team_Handbook ),  and followed that up with a media production workshop to introduce just how important it is to the teams online presence and sharing our activities with the world.    We kicked off the Video Log production competition now known as “Dropfest” ( a serious nod to the awesome work of Tropfest here 🙂  http://tropfest.com/ ),  look forward to the winner being posted here in June!

To keep it interesting and practical we also ran our introduction workshops one Soldering and Basic Workshop skills and the team got to spend hands on time with tools and practice the activities that we use a lot in building the competition robots.   Everyone had a pretty good time and we got some great feedback:

Last night was my first night taking part in the teams skill building workshop &  I just want to say that this has been one of the best experiences I’ve had during a Monday meeting.    I was learning new skills, using new materials (and learning the names of them) and getting hands on experience in a calm, friendly and productive environment.

I loved the layout and setting as well as the small group sizes which allowed less distraction and more individual focus.  So I want to thank all of you for starting this program and especially those who gave tutorials last night as I’ve had an amazing time and am really excited for next weeks lessons.

Much more to come in Term 2 including more workshop time,   Introduction to business management with an interactive game,   Basics of Marketing and Brand Management,  Project Management Introduction,  Building a LED torch from components and then we launch into our new basic development platform with the introduction to Arduino opensource Micro Controllers!

Watch out for the Term 3 programme in the coming weeks to – Mini Sumo competition is being planned.  Use the mentor Zumos or bring your own 🙂   Here how it looks Canadian style !   https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TyHmevF1GBI.
