FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) is a not-for-profit organisation that is dedicated to transforming our culture by creating a world where science and technology are celebrated and where young people dream of becoming science and technology leaders.
They achieve this by running four robotics competitions, Junior FIRST Lego League (JrFLL) and FIRST Lego League (FLL), FIRST Tech Challenge (FTC) and FIRST Robotics Competition (FRC) aimed at primary school, middle school and high school students respectively.
Gracious professionalism is part of the ethos of FIRST. With gracious professionalism, fierce competition and mutual gain are not separate notions. Practically, this means that competitive FRC teams spend much of their time during competition helping new teams to achieve their best. This ensures that the events are as competitive as possible. It’s a way of doing things that encourages high-quality work, empathy for others, and respects individuals and the community.
